Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.0.1
ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select
the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly
created file. You will be also asked for the name of the
application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it
to the user if the application is not present.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
1.0.1 fixes a couple of bugs and has one interface improvement.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

Subject: [*] DarkShutdown 2.1
DarkShutdown is a Darkside 4.1 module which will restart/shut down your
Mac besides darkening the screens after the given time has elapsed.
The Finder or At Ease must be running, because I restart/shut down
by telling them to do it (with Apple Events), so that all open
applications are closed correctly.
There is even an option for responding automatically to the
"Do you want to save..." dialog boxes, useful if the Mac is unattended.
It is fully integrated with Alessandro Levi Montalcini's
Shutdown Delay 2.0.1.
Version 2.0 lets you restart/shut down:
- at a specified time;
- once a specified period of time has elapsed after the Mac starts up;
- once a specified period of time has elapsed after the screen saver engages.
DarkShutdown fades the screen and shows the countdown.
Version 2.1 speaks the countdown (ten-nine-eight-seven...) then speaks
"restart/shutdown" if the Speech Manager is installed.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

------ Original Posting --------
Here's a simple instruction to setup the Linelink for
sending/receiving
faxes with your FaxSTF software.
1. Double click on the Installer icon (in disk 1);
2. On the "Modem Selection" window, check the "Driver Type" radio button;
3. Scroll down the list, select "PN2388 for Sierra based modems";
4. In the INIT String field, modify the "ATVE" to "AT\Q1V1E";
5. Click at "Install" button;
6. Decide if you want to install everything or only to install the driver and
stuff for the TCI modem. For the latter, just select these items -
- FaxMonitor
- FaxStatus
- FaxSoftware
- ModemInit
- FaxModem
7. Restart the Mac;
8. Go to the Chooser for "Setup". (Set the highest speed for S/R, test your
modem initialization string, enter your numbers and so on...)
NOTE: The "\Q1" part in the modem init string sets the modem to bidirectional
XON/XOFF. "&K4" may also be used for this (I don't quite know the difference
between the two). Under these installation/settings, my LineLink is
functioning
very well in 14.4k s/r faxes: it attempts to send/receive at 14.4k, but will
sense the speed of the other end and auto adjust to match the speed.
NOTE2: The LineLink 14.4e uses the Sierra chipset, which is the one with the
diamond shaped microprocessor logo. When you select the "PN2388 for
Sierra...",
the INFO box will tell you that "This is for modems based on Sierra
Semiconductor's chipset using the PN2388 specifications".
BTW, the "Performantz 14.4 S/R Faxmodem" from the MacZone seems to be the same
one as the LineLink. It is priced at $149 bundled with MaxFax. The TCI reps
decline to comment on the specifications because it is a private label
product.
One person mentioned that the Performantz uses a different chipset (either
Reckwell or Exar). Anyhow, all it takes is to open the case and see what's
inside...
BTW2, the LineLink may have more to offer. The ATI4 command returns this
line:
>>> SERIAL * V32BIS * V42BIS * VOICE 2.2 * TIES * CID * V23 * SRFAX *
--------- -----
So could someone please figure out more about this thing?
Happy Egg Hunting!
PS. I don't know much about the technology, feel free to make any
correction...

Subject: ADB II Mouse Problems (R)
Hello!
Paul Kock asks about problems pulling down menus with his new ADB II Mouse.
The short answer is: Go and get a maouse made in Malaysia.
Here's the long answer and a probable explanation of the problem:
I've had the opportunity to install several Mac LCIII's in the past couple
of weeks. The only problem I have had with them is with some of the new
ADBII mice that are included with the system.
Some of the mice, when you go upto a menu, and press the button to select
the menu so you can scroll down and select a menu choice, get stuck at the
op of the menu. You can move the mouse down, but the cursor does not
always follow the mouses movements. I have discovered that when you press
down on the mouse button, on the top of the mouse, it forces the tip of
the mouse down, apparently making the roller lift up in such a way that it
no longer contacts the inner bearing where the cursor gets its movement
information from. I have narrowed this behavior down to a class of mice,
based on my observations, and some input that I have received via the
Info-Mac maillist on the Internet.
There are two types of mice:
Type A: (Good Little Mousy)
Ball: A grey, heavy ball.
Feet: Grey thick teflon feet (Thick being a relative term.)
Manufacturing Country: Malaysia
Type B: (Bad Little Mousy, bad, bad, bad!)
Ball: A black, light, spongy looking ball.
Feet: Light grey/white thin teflon feet. (Not a relative
term.)
Manufacturing Country: Taiwan
I've come up with some solutions to alleiviate the problem:
1. Get a good mouse, try before you buy.
2. Use a mouse pad with a hard surface, not a spongy surface.
3. Do not use a mouse pad at all.
4. Instead of pressing the putton at the top, curve your fingers
around and press the botton on the lower side corners.
5. (I have not done this one.) Replace the ball with a grey ball from
either
a. Apple Service Part.
b. An old ADB mouse. (I like using black balls in the older mice.)
c. An unsuspecting "friend" who has a new mouse with a grey ball.
I hope this has helped you all become more informed and better
socially-adjusted people.
Marshall
All this talk of mouse balls, I wonder what a psychiatrist would say...
1. Get a different mouse, try before you buy.
2. Use a mouse pad with a hard surface, not a spongy surface.

There are a couple of handy unix programs to let you do that. Get on to
Sumex and snatch /info-mac/text/skim-new-unix.txt
[Aside to Gordon: Why the 'text' dir? Wouldn't reinstating the old 'unix'
directory make more sense?]
Once you have it, follow the directions for compiling the program, make
any alterations to your mail address and destination directory, and let
your unix box's compiler have at it. Then you can use the 'skim' command
to look through the new files and pick the ones you want. When you finish
the digest, you'll have a shell script called "download" which will make
the run for you. If you can use the unix 'at' command, have it run the
script around 4 a.m. Pacific time when Sumex isn't very busy.
Enjoy!

After reading the literature on the PPC, and the "New age of Programming"
I have come to the conclusion that I will take on day a week out of my

Should I start with C first and than move to C++? The class I had was

What books or guides are available that will help me learn to program
C or C++ on my mac? As soon as I get this info, and find the right

And the last Q: How does one restart an 840 when It locks up and the

find another way.

The claim that eDisk can quadruple your the size of your disk is all hype.
The best you can expect is about a 2:1 compression ratio (unless ALL files
on your disk is HIGHERLY compressible).

eDisk (or any other driver-level compression program, for that matter) is
NOT for everyone. My advice is not to use a driver-level program on the
start-up disk (or partition). Compressing files that are open and active in
the System Folder is not a good idea (this is true for file-level resource
compression programs as well). It's also not a good idea to compress the
invisible virtual memory swap file. If you have a 40MB or 80MB drive, my
advice is to buy a bigger drive. On the other hand, if you have multiple
disks or a disk with multiple partitions, eDisk may be your answer for more
disk space. You would have to backup your disk (or partition) if you decide
to install/de-install eDisk.

In the latest and greatest info-mac digest, someone reported a problem with
Excel 3 and their Quadra 800. The reason is that Microsoft can't program
great programs the way they should. Excel 3 is incompatable with a Quadra.
You have two options really, patch it to version 3.0a (available from

I have a Centris 660AV (my 840AV is still on order and I'm totally impatient

with it. So far (knock on polypropylene) it has worked flawlessly. I am able
to
connect to America Online at 2400 without any trouble. Perhaps the problem
others have had is in the local Tymnet et al. type connections.
I do have one question though. The documentation lists the current Geoport
modem software as 9600 bps. When I connect to my office network (via a Shiva
Netmodem capable of V.32bis throughput) the software reports that I connect at
14400. Is Apple just being conservative? Does the software really support
V.32bis or is the connection rate due to MNP5 or V.42bis compression? Or am I
totally confused in general about this stuff?

First: Get a more recent version of newswatcher. 2.0d16 is most recent.
Second: You quite likely cannot connect to the servers you describe

Just unpacked a couple of HP LJ4Ms a few days ago. Removed LocalTalk
board, installed Ethernet board, plugged into AppleTalk Phase 2 10baseT
network, and printed from a Mac II using LaserWriter 7.1 driver - very
easy, no problems. Didn't test the HP-supplied driver - we don't really
need the features.
The Ethernet card automatically supports multiple protocols in a slightly
strange fashion - the first protocol to try to print to the printer wins,
and all other protocols are ignored after that. Very nice from a
plug-and-play standpoint, but slightly non-deterministic.
You can (and should) hand-configure the appropriate protocol (and other
information) using the control panel on the printer. The printers have
been whisked away, but off the top of my head I believe they support
AppleTalk Phase 1 and Phase 2, TCP/IP, Netware, and something from
Microsoft. We use only AppleTalk Phase 2, of course :-).
This was my first experience with HP printers - have supported many models
of Apple LaserWriters until now. The HPs are wonderfully flexible - and
complex. My gut feeling is you could configure the printer into a totally
catatonic state in just a few minutes. I appreciate Apple's simplicity
much more now.

2. On the "Modem Selection" window, check the "Driver Type" radio button;
3. Scroll down the list, select "PN2388 for Sierra based modems";
4. In the INIT String field, modify the "ATVE" to "AT\Q1V1E";
5. Click at "Install" button;
6. Decide if you want to install everything or only to install the driver and
stuff for the TCI modem. For the latter, just select these items -
- FaxMonitor
- FaxStatus
- FaxSoftware
- ModemInit
- FaxModem
7. Restart the Mac;
The ATI4 command returns this
line:
>>> SERIAL * V32BIS * V42BIS * VOICE 2.2 * TIES * CID * V23 * SRFAX *
--------- -----
So could someone please figure out more about this thing?
Happy Egg Hunting!
PS. I don't know much about the technology, feel free to make any
correction...

I don't know if this'll help, but ...
>From TidBITS#182:
**If File Sharing starts slowly** on cold mornings, try deleting
the AppleShare PDS file that lives at the root level on each
shared volume. Jon Pugh <jpugh@apple.com> posted this tip on
Info-Mac, saying that it took File Sharing about an hour to start
up on his PowerBook, and after deleting the file, it took less
than a minute. My Mac always seemed to start slowly as well, so I
used ResEdit to make the AppleShare PDS files on all my volumes
visible (at which point you can see the snazzy killer rabbit
icon), trashed them, and then rebooted. I presume that File
Sharing rebuilt them on the subsequent reboot, and File Sharing
starts up much faster now. You will lose all your sharing
preferences, but since I have nothing fancy set up, it wasn't a
problem for me. (I just log in to my SE/30's volumes from the
PowerBook as the owner, which allows me to avoid setting up
sharing for each individual volume. I once heard that using the
Finder's Sharing menu item to share the disks, which lets you
share specific folders and set more specific privileges, exacts a
small performance hit.)
Good luck!

No reason why it shouldn't. When I first looked at the 400, I found that
the "About this Macintosh" box didn't respond with the model name of the
computer. Hmmm.... I fired up ClarisWorks, which snags Gestalt info for
its about box, and repeated the experiment. The info said:
"Macintosh Model: LC II"
For a low-cost Performa-to-LC II upgrade, I'm betting you can buy a
standard System 7.1 package, do a clean install and get somebody who has
the Garamond Narrow font to make you a front-panel decal. No logic board
changes, no huge upgrade fee (except for the system software).
For my next feat, I'll turn a Workgroup Server 80 into a Quadra 800 with a

I have a Powerbook 100 (one of the $800 fire sale models from

That is, it would not boot up and Norton Utilities and the
Apple HD Set-up Application would not even recognize the hard

Does anyone out there know of a hard disk service notice that

[Yes, folks, there is a way. Info mac does have a mail server setup. Here
is the form letter I send in response to queries:
Send a message to LISTSERV@ricevm1.rice.edu with your commands (either single
or one to a line) as the body of the message. The subject line doesn't
matter.
Possible commands:
HELP
$MACARCH HELP
$MACARCH INDEX
$MACARCH GET 00DIR.RECENT
$MACARCH GET VIRUS-GATEKEEPER.HQX
The file should show up as a mail message to you. There may be two additional
messages also; one tells you what name the file will be sent to you under
(for reasons to do with Bitnet support it doesn't use the real name).
The other tells you how much CPU time you burned.
Please be considerate of the nice people at Rice in your use of the
server. This means keep the bulk of your usage outside of working hours.
If too many people load down the system, we might lose this capability.
Don't contact us for help with the server -- we don't know any more than
what's in this message. Send questions/problems to mark@ricevm1.rice.edu.
If you are in Europe, please use the similar fileserv@irlearn.bitnet instead
of listserv@ricevm1.rice.edu. That saves time and network telephone bills.

Chris - For Brian Wolf's Sad Mac list look in i-m/info/hdwr/sad-mac-code. The
error #41 is system error and according to the "system errors list"
(i-m/util/sys-error-da) that translates to "can't load finder error". You
might try a "clean" reinstallation of the system. To do that you need to move
the finder on your hard drive into any other folder in the system folder and
then reboot with disk one of the system installer set.

Subject: Strange SE Behavior
Strange SE Behavior
I have a user that has an SE with an external HD. When she boots up the Mac,
it goes all the way to the Finder (Sys 6) and than comes up with an error
dialog that says "This disk is unreadable. Do you want to initialize it?" It
has two buttons, Eject (which is the default button) and Initialize. Besides
this, is has an icon of the SE, with and external FLOPPY drive attached (there
is none), indicating that that is where the problem lies. If we click either
Eject or Initialize, the box goes away for a few seconds only to come up
again.
OK, I scrounged up an external floppy drive and attached it. It still comes
up
with the same error message at boot-up. But when I click on the Eject button
(with a disk in the drive) it does what you expect it to do -- it ejects the
disk. When you click on the Initialize button, it starts to initialize, only
to abort with an "Initialzation Failed!" message. The original error dialog
comes back, but this time the icon is of the SE with an arrow pointing at the
top floppy drive. Pressing the Initialize button now gives the message
"Initialzation Failed! This disk is write-protected!". I get the error
message when there's NO disk in the drive, a write-protected disk in the
drive,
or a non-write-protected disk in the drive.
After dismissing the "Initialization Failed" error dialog, I get the original
error dialog again, but now the icon has an arrow pointing at the lower floppy
drive. Again I go through the procedure, and again I click the OK button in
the "Initialization Failed" error dialog. Now we're back to the error with
the
external floppy icon.
In a totally unrelated situation, there's another user that has an SE with an
external CMS hard drive. His problem is that he gets 6 images of the hard
drive as well as 6 images of any files that are on his desktop. It doesn't
affect what he's doing, 'cuz he can click on any of them to open either the
file or the hard drive, but it's kind of perculiar, and I would like to get a
solution for this.
Anyone have any ideas about either problem? Any assistance would be mucho
appreciated. TIA!

I recently had the same problem. This is direct from Symantec:
Instructions for creating a System 7.1 Emergency Disk:
_What you will need:_
A blank, formatted High Density diskette
Your original Norton Utilities Emergency Disk or Emergency Disk HD
The "Disk Tools" disk that came with your Macintosh.
_What you need to do:_
1) Name the blank floppy disk "7.1 Emergency Disk".
2) Copy the System and System Enabler XXX* file from the Disk Tools Disk
onto the 7.1 Emergency Disk
3) Copy the "Norton Utils" application from the original Norton Emergency
Disk onto the 7.1 Emergency Disk
4) Open the Norton Utilities Application by double clicking on it.
5) When the main menu appears type the letter E on your keyboard, to start
the Norton Disk Editor. You will be asked to "Choose a volume to explore."
6) Select the 7.1 Emergency Disk and open it. A "Directory Window" will
appear.
7) Choose "Boot Blocks" from the "Objects" menu.
8) Highlight the word "Finder" that appears to the right of the category
"Finder Name."
9) Hold down the Command (open Apple) key and type a J. You will now be
looking at a hexadecimal display, highlighting a "06." Note the offset
in the upper right hand corner of the window; it should read "26."
10) Type a "0C" (zero-C) and hit the Tab key. You will now be highlighting
the letter F in "Finder."
11) Type the name "Norton Utils," exactly as the application is named on
the floppy disk; don't worry that the text wraps onto the next line.
When you are done typing, your offset should read 39.
12) Type a Command-J. The text to the right of "Finder Name" should now
read "Norton Utils." If not, go back to step #8 and try again.
13) Click the close box in the upper left hand corner of the window.
You'll be asked ifyou want to save the changes. Save them.
14) Quit from Norton Utilities and test your new disk by booting from it.
* You will have a System Enabler file to copy only if your Macintosh
requires System 7.1. If you don't have an enabler on the Disk Tools disk
that came with your Macintosh, you don't need to worry about copying an
enabler.
It also adds that if you need any other help in making the disks, you can
call their Technical Support Line at (310) 449 - 4990. Tech. Support is open
between 7 am and 5 pm Pacific time.
Hope this helps!
